Glow Up with Exfoliation: Why Scrubbing Your Skin is Essential

Skin exfoliation before and after

Exfoliating your skin is a step that should not be skipped in your skincare routine. It involves removing dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, revealing brighter and smoother skin underneath. Here are the top reasons why you should exfoliate your skin:

Prevents acne and breakouts

Dead skin cells can lead to clogged pores, which then result in acne and breakouts. By regularly exfoliating your skin, you can remove these dead skin cells and prevent acne from forming.

Improves skin texture

When we are young our skin cells shed and the skin renews itself every 15-30 days. When we get older that process slows down. Think about that - we who are no longer in our 30’s could be packing around dead skin from a week ago! That even grosses me out and that’s not an easy task. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells and smooth out the texture of your skin, making it feel softer and look healthier. Promoting cell turnover and removing dead skin cells can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Increases absorption of skincare products

It doesn’t matter how good of a product you put on your skin if it can’t penetrate into the deeper dermal layer. Using exfoliating products will smooth and polish the epidermis layer allowing your skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin, making them more effective. This way, you can get the most out of the products you're using.

Brightens complexion

Under a microscope, old dead skin cells can be seen clumped together with sunscreen, lotions, and dirt from life. Removing these dead skin cells can help to reveal a brighter and more even skin tone. This can improve the overall appearance of your complexion and give you a healthy glow.

Boosts circulation

Exfoliating can also stimulate blood circulation, which brings more oxygen and nutrients to the skin. This helps to promote healthy skin and a radiant complexion. Those of us with sensitive skin need to be careful here with our exuberance. Too much stimulation can cause us to look red and irritated.

Exfoliators

There are many things that can be used as an exfoliator. Here at Silly Bean Soap, we like to use gentle exfoliators like poppyseeds, coffee grounds, and ground oatmeal. But one of the best exfoliators is alpha hydroxy acid which is derived from foods like sugar, milk, apples, and citrus. Sheep milk has higher levels of alpha hydroxy acids than goat or cow milk. The small molecular size of alpha hydroxy allows it to penetrate not only the epidermis layer but deeper into the dermal layer causing dead stuck together skin cells to come off leaving room for glorious new skin cells to take their place.

Exfoliating your skin is a necessity. It can help to prevent acne, improve skin texture, increase absorption of skincare products, brighten complexion, and boost circulation. Make sure to use a gentle exfoliator and avoid over-exfoliating to avoid irritating your skin. Happy scrubbing!
